Infrared Technology Comes of Age
What exactly is infrared or radiant heat? No need to worry - it has nothing to do with either ultraviolet radiation (which gives you
a sunburn and damages your skin) or atomic radiation (the kind from a nuclear bomb).
Radiant heat is simply a form of energy that heats objects directly through a process called conversion, without having to heat the air in between. Radiant heat is also called infrared energy (IR). Our sun is the principal source of radiant energy that we enjoy daily (some more so than others). Have you ever been outside on a partly cloudy spring day of about 50 degrees F. and felt quite comfortable until the sun was suddenly obscured by a cloud? Although the air temperature had not had time to drop, you felt chilled, as the cloud would not let the warming infrared rays through to reach you.
Infrared light is an important energy force that promotes healing - a rising of the white blood cell count. Why is that good? Because more white blood cells mean greater immunity. Greater immunity means greater health and a better quality of life.
Today we're seeing new technologies employing far-infrared energy in health care products and in clinical protocols such as hypothermia, therapies for detoxification, and cancer treatment.
Energy medicine is an ancient practice and Chinese health practitioners would use healing touch therapies for improved cell growth, DNA synthesis and protein synthesis in cells. Although these ancient practitioners did not know the technical terms as to why their therapy improved health, they were sure their patients got better.
Yes, the human heat from their touch increased immune defense response in which white blood cells surround and ingested small living things (like bacteria) and cell wastes.
Far-infrared heat follows the same principle: warm the injury site to speed healing. Why is infrared heat better than say, a heating pad? Because the vibrational energy of far-infrared light is unlike that of the heat energy we use for everyday functions, like cooking. Boiling water could actually damage our skin but it doesn't heat internal organs. Sunlight heats us in a profound way, however, because it contains penetrating far-infrared rays as well as the full range of energy in the electromagnetic spectrum.
I know what you must be thinking - how can I benefit from the sun's infrared rays? I don't live near the equator. Besides, I thought the sun's rays were damaging to my skin. While it's true the sun's rays should be used judiciously, especially by fair-skinned people, the fact remains that infrared radiation promotes health. A few companies have captured the essence of this healing energy by creating cedar saunas and smaller wraps for localized healing in specific areas of the body.
Over the past 25 years, Japanese and Chinese researchers and clinicians have done extensive research on infrared treatments and reported many provocative findings. Whole-body infrared therapy has been used for over 80 years by German physicians in an independently developed form.
Among other benefits, whole-body infrared thermal systems make it possible for people in wheelchairs, or those who are otherwise unable to exert themselves, or who won't follow through on an exercising and conditioning program to achieve a cardiovascular training effect. This also allows for more variety in any ongoing exercise program.
As for infrared's outstanding effect on caloric consumption and weight control, we find that burning from 600 to 2,400 calories in a 30 minute session to be quite routine. The infrared thermal system might then simulate the consumption of energy equal to that expended in a 6 to 9 mile run during only a single session. This would be invaluable for those who don't exercise and those who can't exercise yet want an effective weight control and fitness maintenance program.
Evidently the flushing of toxins from the lymph areas and from the largest organ of elimination, the skin, are the source of many these health improvements. Toxemia has been targeted as the number one reason so many of us are ill. With the elimination of these poisons from deep within the body, the organs can then do their job unhindered. Although any health-restoring strategy involves some type of cleansing diet and supplements, infrared therapy would definitely be called for to augment the process more efficiently.
The list of health enhancements through the use of infrared therapy is impressive and it includes: relief from all forms of arthritis, increase in the extensibility of collagen tissues, relieves muscle spasms and joint stiffness, increases blood flow, assists in resolution of inflammatory infiltrates, odema and exudates, weight control, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, coronary artery disease, blood circulation, ear, nose and throat conditions, skin conditions (including cellulite) and all-around beauty treatment.
Is infrared therapy a cure-all? Well, I don't believe that. But its value cannot be ignored. Especially in view of the fact that millions suffer from toxic overload and its vast array of symptoms. Perhaps many more will come to view it as the body care system of the future just like NASA's astronauts and newborn babies have.

Sweat your way to a healthier heart - and a better sex life - in four weeks or less
By Jonathan V. Wright
Until a few weeks ago, when I thought of saunas, I thought of Scientology. It sounds like a stretch, but actually, researchers affiliated with the Church of Scientology have been studying the health benefits of saunas since the 1970's, and their findings have been impressive. In one study, the Scientologist researchers used biopsies to measure participants' levels of toxic burden and found that after just 30 days of daily sauna therapy, their burdens went down by as much as 66 percent. Impressive as these results are, let's face it: Scientology, in any form, just isn't met with much respect. So their sauna research has not made many waves in the medical community. However, thanks to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the health-promoting effects of saunas might finally get a bit more of the attention they deserve. Saunas are still great for their traditional uses: meditation and detoxification. But this new research shows that they may also improve heart function in patients with congestive heart failure. And, if it works the way the study suggests, saunas should be able to improve male sexual function, too.
Big benefits after just one week
Saunas have been around in Europe, especially Northern Europe, for hundreds (probably thousands) of years. In America, some of the earliest inhabitants developed and passed down the tradition of "sweat lodges" for both health and spiritual benefits. Believe it or not, there are actually a surprising number of controlled studies on saunas - specifically, a type known as far infrared sauna. Far infrared saunas are sort of the "new kid on the (sauna) block," having become very popular in Japan over the past century. Far infrared saunas are a bit different than the traditional steam versions. Far infrared waves warm things without actually heating up the air in between the heat source and the object. So in a far infrared sauna, the air is warm and dry, as opposed to the humid heat in traditional saunas. The research group's first study on the health effects of far infrared saunas took place in Japan and involved golden hamsters. (If you want a quick laugh, try picturing a hamster in a sauna). One group of hamsters received actual sauna temperatures - usually between 105 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit - daily for four weeks. The control group was placed in a room-temperature sauna that was not turned on for equal lengths of time. Chemical analysis showed greater amounts of a substance called nitric oxide synthase in the endothelial (lining) cells of the aorta, as well as the coronary, carotid, and femoral arteries of the hamsters that got the real sauna treatments. The reason this finding is so important is that increased levels of nitric oxide synthase will produce more nitric oxide. Nitric oxide dilates coronary arteries, helping to improve heart function. That's good news on it's own, but it gets even better. More detailed analysis showed a 40-fold increase in nitric oxide synthase in the endothelial cells of the aorta after just one week. After four weeks of treatment, the increase leveled off but steadied at 50 percent. With such encouraging results from the hamster study, the researchers decided to test this approach in individuals with congestive heart failure, and this is the study that caught my eye recently.
Saunas tackle congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis, and hypertension
The researchers treated 20 congestive heart failure patients with far infrared sauna daily for two weeks. They were compared with 10 "control-group" individuals, matched for age, sex, and degree of heart failure (according to the widely accepted New York Heart Association (NYHA)'s classification system. After just two weeks of far infrared treatment, 17 of 20 sauna-treated individuals had significant improvement in clinical symptoms. Their ultrasound evaluations and blood tests were also significantly better. None of the 10 control group individuals had any change. Previously, the same researchers had studied 25 younger men (ages 31-45) with one or more "coronary risk factors," including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and smoking. They were compared with 10 healthy younger men (ages 27-43) who had none of these risk factors. Compared with the "normal" men, the men with risk factors had impaired blood vessel dilation. After just two weeks of daily far infrared sauna treatments, the risk-factor group had very significant improvements in blood vessel dilation. The researchers wrote that these results "suggest a therapeutic role for [far infrared] sauna therapy in patients with risk factors for atherosclerosis." Given the hamster-in-the-sauna results, it's very likely that the improved blood vessel dilation in the men with cardiovascular risk factors resulted from higher levels of nitric oxide synthase. Although none of the studies have measured it specifically, far infrared sauna therapy will very likely lower blood pressure for many individuals too. This theory makes sense, since the mechanism of action is the same as in congestive heart failure: An increase in nitric oxide dilates blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. If the studies I mentioned above are any indicator, it shouldn't take long to find out, either, since the effects in both hamsters and humans occurred in just two to four weeks. Even though there's no clinical proof yet, I also think it is very likely that combining the amino acid L-arginine (another precursor of nitric oxide) with far infrared sauna therapy would produce even better results than either therapy alone - whether you are using it for hypertension or congestive heart failure. This article is reprinted from Dr. Jonathan V. The Ultimate Solution to Disease
by Dr. Sherry Rogers
Total Wellness May 2000.
If I look at the last 100 people who were extremely ill, who have been everywhere, done everything, and are still sick, what caused it? In spite of the fact that many have become excellent students of environmental medicine, some are not 100% well. What is holding them back? The major demons are heavy metals (mercury leads the list) pesticides, detox deficiencies, and Candida.
The ultimate mercury removal? The best way to get rid of heavy metals and pesticide residues? The Infrared Sauna. It has been known for decades that sweating is a wonderful way to get rid of stored chemicals, including heavy metals. In fact, sauna is one of the detoxification procedures used in the environmental Units in Dallas (Dr. William Rea) and North Charleston (Dr. Allan Lieberman) where the sickest of folks go to heal. But many people, myself included, never could tolerate a sauna. We felt weak, sick, fast heart rate, faint, dizzy, headachy, or just miserable. Thanks to improved technology, the infrared sauna is tolerated much better, because it uses a heat energy that penetrates the tissues better, allowing an overall lower temperature to be used.
Another thing I always worried about in the sauna, even for the few brief moments I could stand one, was the fact that my eyeballs burned so much. I couldn't believe that the heat on my corneas was good for them and feared triggering cataracts. No studies have ever been done on this. Anyway, I don't get that type of eye pain in the infrared sauna, only profuse sweating. And that is just the effect you do want in order to release nasty toxins from storage sites.
The body can get rid of stored mercury through stool, urine or sweat. The sweat route is the most efficient and natural (man used to physically work before computers were invented). I used to hesitate to recommend something as expensive, but when you realize the lifelong incapacity and expense of diseases such as heart disease, chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, chronic pain syndromes, migraines, Alzheimer's, or any others caused by chemical and metal toxicity, a sauna is cheap.
Add to that the fact that it may be the primary "cure" or solution to the problem and it is a win-win situation. I think this is so important that I am going to show you in the future issues how you might be able to get insurance reimbursement and how to do a program at home with the right minerals and protocol so that you don't sweat yourself into a cardiac arrest from depleting your good minerals along with your heavy metals, pesticides, and other pollutants.
The majority of folks with insurmountable medical problems have stored chemicals (pesticides and heavy metals top the list), poisoning the recovery system. Going to an environmental unit is a luxury.
Sweating, is a God-given mechanism, but it must be done properly and safely to be successful. The infrared sauna is something that you would use for a lifetime, for the world will never run out of ways to poison us. It is a major tool in your anti-aging program. Because it is a major expense, you might want to figure out a way to put it in a garage, basement, game room, patio, lanai, or porch and share the cost with neighbors.,
The pollution of the world is not going to go away. To unload the body enough so that it can heal itself, infrared sauna is my preferred tool. And for continued health once you arrive at your goal, sauna again is a weekly necessity forever. Nothing stands by itself and you need the total load. But certainly for now, I think it is exceedingly neat that we can treat with heat.

SWEAT YOUR WAY TO RADIANT HEALTH
For thousands of years, cultures throughout the world have enjoyed the many therapeutic benefits of saunas, from the elaborate bath/sauna/exercise complexes of the Romans, to the simple but effective sweat lodge structures of the Scandinavians. These cultures recognized the many therapeutic benefits of the sauna (i.e., rids body of toxins, aids weight loss, kills viruses), fully enjoying these benefits in a community setting.
In Finland, the sauna has been a tradition for over 1,000 years. In a country of approximately five million people, there are an estimated 700,000 saunas - one for every seven people! In fact, the sauna is credited for much of the rugged vitality and endurance of the Finnish people.
Dry Saunas Have Many Therapeutic Benefits
Both saunas and steam rooms can be used to relax and unwind. However, dry saunas have an advantage over steam rooms by helping to rid the body of more toxic metals picked up from the environment. Of course, the kidneys take out many of these toxins but a daily sweat can help reduce the body’s accumulation of lead, mercury and nickel in addition to cadmium, sodium, sulfuric acid and cholesterol.
The sauna is also more beneficial than the steam room if weight loss is desired because the energy expenditure. Compared to the steam room, the sauna places a greater demand on the body in terms of using up calories, thus assists in fat loss. Therefore, the heart needs to work harder to send more blood to the capillaries under the skin. The energy required for that process is derived from the conversion of fat and carbohydrates to calories,
In addition, the sweat glands must work to produce sweat, which also requires energy and more calories. Studies show a person can burn up to 300 calories during a sauna session, the equivalent of a two-to-three-mile jog or an hour of moderate weight training.
People can lose up to a quart of water during a 20 minute sauna. Without replacement, such a high water loss can lead to disruption of normal heart rhythms and cause fatigue and nausea. Therefore, drinking fresh juice or water before, during and after the sauna is highly recommended.
Sweating by overheating the body in a dry sauna also produces the following effects:
* Speeds up metabolic processes of vital organs and inhabits the growth of pathogenic bacteria and viruses. The vital organs and glands (including endocrine and sex glands) are stimulated to increased activity.
* Creates fever reactions that kills potentially dangerous viruses/bacteria and increase the number of leukocytes in the blood, thereby strengthening the immune system.
* Places demands upon the cardiovascular system, making the heart pump harder and producing a drop in diastolic blood pressure.
* Stimulates vasodilatation of peripheral vessels, which relieves pain and speeds healing of sprains, strains, bursitis, peripheral vascular diseases, arthritis and muscle pain.
* Promotes relaxation, thereby lending a feeling of well-being.
Studies Show Health Benefits to Artificially Induced Fever
Noble Prize winner Dr. Andre Lwoff, a French virologist, believes that high temperatures during infection help combat the growth of a virus.
German physical education professor named Dr. Ernst has found no cancer patients among marathon runners. Analyzing their sweat, he found it contained cadmium, lead and nickel.
Ernst concludes these athletes excrete these potential cancer causing elements from their bodies by perspiring. He and other scientists also conclude it is necessary to sweat profusely at least once a day to maintain good health.
Usually, only the most active athletes achieve sweat through heavy exercise on a daily basis. Those who are unable to exercise heavily, for whatever reason, have an even greater need to create a regular sweat.
Infrared Saunas Allow for Fresh Air Ventilation
The radiant heat, infrared saunas are the same saunas many doctors, physical therapists and professional athletes use to treat muscle injury and strains, as well as hospitals to warm newborn babies. Underwriters Laboratories has safely tested radiant heat, infrared technology for fire and shock. These saunas are also low-cost and energy efficient.
Unlike the old-technology saunas with their high air temperature, the infrared saunas warm the body muscles directly. It does this by only warming the air to a comfortable level, allowing for fresh air ventilation so people never get that feeling of suffocation.
Because people are able to use this type of sauna for a longer time, they are able to reap greater benefits than through the high temperature saunas. Also because body temperature will rise slightly, the body reacts in the normal manner by raising the heart rate to a mild aerobic range. Thus, it increases the blood flow; opens the capillaries for greater blood flow to sluggish areas; opens the pores; and creates a deep sweat that flushes the toxins.
Use Saunas Cautiously for Positive Results
When saunas are used regularly, studies have shown benefits such as improved blood circulation, restored youthfulness, toxin and heavy metal reduction, weight control, cellulite reduction, skin cleansing and rejuvenation, allergy reduction, rash reduction.
However, certain people need to approach saunas slowly and cautiously. Folks over age 60 are in high-risk group for undiagnosed heart disease, so people should see a doctor before using a sauna.
Today sweating is not only in, it’s been proven to be one of the healthiest things a body can do. Nothing beats the feeling of overall well-being and other health benefits of a good sweat.

Healing Chronic Illness at Home
Oxygen, Ozone, Sauna and Detoxification for Lyme Disease, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and MCS
11-21-2003
By Jill Neimark with Byron White, N.D.
Jill Neimark is an author and journalist who writes frequently on health and science for national publications. Ms. Neimark is also a Lyme patient. Byron White, N.D., is a naturopath who suffers from Lyme disease and employs a variety of home-based therapies to successfully manage chronic illness.
Three and a half years ago, on a pleasant June afternoon, my life plunged off a cliff into free fall. I walked in a Connecticut garden and twelve days later had a big bull’s-eye rash on the back of my knee and a classic case of Lyme disease. Even though I went on antibiotics at once, I slid into a nightmare of ill health.
Antibiotics stemmed, but did not kill, the infection. As the spirochete relentlessly invaded my nerve tissue, I felt as if electronic buzzers were being pushed incessantly throughout my body. I suffered from vertigo, terrible thirst, and incredible pain in my neck and back. I was also crushed by a fatigue so profound I figured if it lasted, I’d eventually waste away and die.
Thus began an odyssey that has not yet ended although I am improving steadily and without using antibiotics. In the course of research, I met and befriended a knowledgeable naturopath who suffers from lyme himself, Dr. Byron White. Together we have put together an approach to healing therapies that you can do at home—all of which should be monitored by your doctor, of course. These therapies are intended to restore oxygen to hypoxic cells, kill pathogens, help detoxify the liver, colon and entire body, and use hypothermia to improve immune function and metabolism and help the body sweat out toxins. These profound healing therapies employ both age-old naturopathic techniques and state-of-the-art modern tools, and they are ideal for the chemically sensitive who cannot tolerate drugs.
A hand-tailored approach in our own homes allows us to move from illness to health slowly, carefully, and with needed rest and ease. “It is important to fit the treatment to the person and not the person to the treatment,” explains Dr. White. Each person’s body goes through a natural building and detoxification cycle as it heals.
HEALING AT HOME: THREE ESSENTIAL POINTS
Before you begin a healing journey, it’s important to know that:
1) No matter how bad it gets, you can get better.
2) Patience is key, because each body is different, and you must allow yourself time for trial and error, and for cycles of improvement as well as mistakes and setbacks. Think of yourself on a treasure hunt, picking up clues along the way.
3) If possible, seek therapies you can do at home in your own time, and on your own schedule, while listening to your body’s responses and discussing them with a trusted medical practitioner who will be your guide in healing.
HYPERBARIC OXYGEN: Restoring The Entire Body
The first therapy that both Dr. White and I use is hyperbaric oxygen. We both own portable hyperbaric oxygen chambers that have made a significant difference in our health. These home chambers are approved by the FDA, are available by prescription from your doctor, and pressurize to low, safe levels—4.5 psi, or about 10 feet below sea level. They are often called “mild” hyperbaric oxygen chambers. With the use of an oxygen concentrator and a medical pass-through, they can increase tissue oxygen levels up to 400%.
Hyperbaric oxygen treatments trigger a marked increase in the ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria, help new blood vessels grow, saturate tissues with healing oxygen that helps stop damage from toxins and inhibit the growth of anaerobic bacteria. They also improve brain function. One specialist in mild hyperbaric therapy, Gunnar Heuser, M.D., Ph.D., found that using these chambers, circulation and blood flow improved in the brain (using specializing scanning imagery), after only ten sessions. Rhett Bergeron, M.D. offers mild hyperbaric for patients in his two clinics outside Atlanta, Georgia. Most individuals with chronic illness suffer from hypoxia, he notes. “I have found that patients respond extremely favorably to the hyperbaric treatments,” says Dr. Bergeron. “Mild hyperbaric has been shown to be just as effective as treatments at greater pressures and the patients like how it makes them feel.”
The first hyperbaric chamber in medicine was made by a British physician in 1662. However, hyperbaric treatments just recently became available for home use in a portable chamber. I learned about portable chambers through Lance Brubaker, who was diagnosed with lyme in 1990 and now works with Dr. Bergeron. I had benefited from hyperbaric at much higher pressures in clinics, but the cost was prohibitive, and I hated having to relocate to get my treatments, and I never was able to take off enough time to make a long-lasting difference in my health.
According to Lance, at his sickest, “I literally couldn’t walk 200 feet without passing out. I had countless disassociated symptoms, some life-threatening.” In 1994, he shut down his business and built his own home hyperbaric chamber. “I did hyperbaric three times a week for two months, and two times a week after that for two years. I also added in a low temperature sauna protocol, and did a lot of cleansing and detoxify.” Today, Lance is fully recovered. Last summer, at Lance’s invitation, I visited Dr. Bergeron’s clinic, tried just two sessions in the portable chamber and was delighted to feel improvement in energy and muscle strength, as well as lessening of the buzzing static that seems to accompany lyme, and that author Amy Tan (who suffers from late stage lyme) has called, “Dolby digital syndrome.”
(I also got a look at Lance’s old chamber, which sits like a proud relic in his garage, a testament to his ingenuity and pure guts, as the thing is built out of butane tank and submarine hatch and has no windows. Today he has a state-of-the-art portable chamber in one of his extra bedrooms and still uses it if he feels a cold coming on or wants a tune-up.)
Before my home chamber I was suffering excruciating headaches that I call “lymegraines”—they were clobbering me once or twice a week. Since getting my chamber last July, the headaches have vanished. My energy, digestion and sleep are improved. But perhaps the greatest benefit is how I feel in the chamber: as if all my neurons, which had been unhitched and cut and were just dangling and doing the jitterbug, have been reconnected and are working properly. I even drift off to sleep at times. So, oddly, it has become my favorite place—a kind of womb of feel-good safety. I use my chamber about twice a week.
My response to the chamber is typical, according to Dr. Ignacio Fojgel, M.D., Founder & Head of the Complementary & Integrative Medicine Department at Maimonides University in Argentina, and Chief of the Hyperbaric Medicine Unit there. “The action of pressure on the autonomic nervous system has never been given its due attention. Many people sleep during the session or become relaxed and peaceful.
Parasympathetic up-regulation occurs, and a relatively high parasympathetic tone is needed for most healing processes to happen.” In fact, in chronic illness, the sympathetic nervous system is often dominant and can trigger nervousness, agitation, hyperactivity, sleep difficulties, and deregulation of hormones and neurotransmitters. Hyperbaric treatment helps restore balance.
Barbara Kris, a 60 year old from North Carolina, suffers from post-polio syndrome and lupus, and nearly died a year ago from necrotizing fascists, pneumonia and heart failure. Daily home treatments with hyperbaric oxygen, along with alternative therapies like chelating and glutathione, have brought her back to a normal life. “People tell me it’s miraculous. A year ago the weakness in my legs was so bad I couldn’t get up from a chair, and my doctor tells me without the hyperbaric treatments I would probably have lost my hand. I am thoroughly grateful and I would not be without my chamber.”
With a home chamber you can calibrate your treatment to your schedule and need. You can also do treatments over a period of months and years, rather than a brief stay at a clinic. “When I first began hyperbaric,” says Dr. White, “I started with very low pressure and no additional oxygen. I was severely deconditioned from illness and twenty minutes was all my body wanted. As my body began to function at a higher level, it began to push out excess carbon monoxide. One of the things your body will do when it gets more oxygen, and thus more energy, is to begin to detox.” Over a period of months he built up to higher pressures and added in more oxygen, and watched neuropath pain slowly vanish, while fatigue, balance and memory problems improved.
There are other methods that may increase oxygen levels although the honest truth is, they are not nearly as powerful as they do not push oxygen into the tissues. Still, we know of one lyme patient who breathes in oxygen through a cannula while increasing his circulation by sitting in a hot bath. For those who are well enough, light exercise on a treadmill or stationery bicycle while breathing in oxygen is also helpful. Finally, one bedridden patient took an oxygen supplement called DiOxychlor along with a supplement called nattokinase, which helps clear fibrin from the blood and allow nutrients to access cells more readily. She noticed improvement after combining the two supplements (today, with many alternative therapy interventions she is 90% improved).
OZONE: Killing Pathogens and Oxygenating Cells
Although at times I feel evangelistic about my chamber, I know it is not a silver-bullet. In fact, there is no silver bullet in chronic illness, because it is a multisystemic breakdown. Usually a person with CFIDS, fibromyalgia, lyme, lupus, or any such chronic disorder has a number of chronic infections and toxic overload.
Another oxygen therapy that both Dr. White and I use is ozone, or 03. Ozone is known to be bactericidal, fungidical, protozoacidal and virucidal. In short, it is a strong germicide. It also oxidizes toxins, certain metals, and pesticides—breaking them down so the body can excrete them (with help from naturopathic techniques which we will explain shortly). Ozone works as a free-radical. Our own neutrophils, which kill pathogens, actually manufacture ozone, according to recent research by the Scripps Institute. "Neutrophils are very small cells, but they are very nasty microbicidal agents," says Bernard Babior, professor at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) and an expert in neutrophils, which he has been studying for over 30 years. "An active neutrophil kills a bacterium in only a few seconds, using at least a dozen and a half mechanisms." Apparently the neutrophils feed singlet oxygen (01) to antibodies, which convert it to 03 and use it to poke holes in pathogens and kill them.
“I tested positive for h. pylori four years ago and was suffering from gastritis and severe abdominal pain,” recalls Dr. White. “I drank four glasses of ozonated water daily for a month and my symptoms cleared up. When I was re-tested I was negative.” Dr. White also utilizes ozonal, ozone pumped through olive oil, in order to treat sinus and bronchial infection. This is considered safe to breathe.
A great pioneer in ozone therapy is chiropractor Saul Pressman, of Vancouver. He grew up on a farm and unwittingly poisoned himself with pesticides several times. “I developed fibromyalgia so bad that by age 33 I had to go on all fours to go up and down stairs,” he recalls. Adopting a naturopathic approach, he learned he had celiac disease and eliminated all gluten products, which improved his health. He also began to use ozone. Today he is completely healthy. “Now I am 50 and run up stairs two at a time.”
In Saul’s world, ozone is forever—rather than diamonds, for the story his wife told me is half fairy-tale and half healing odyssey. Years ago, Sherri-Lee Pressman had chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia so extreme she was on disability. “I couldn’t lift my arms for the pain. I’d take a shower and be so exhausted I had to lie down and rest for an hour.” Determined to get well, she worked with a naturopath and over time recovered about 75%, returned to work, and met Saul Pressman. Three weeks later, for Christmas, he gave her an ozone generator. “I was really blown away,” she recalls. “I knew what it meant to him.” Another three weeks passed and he asked her to marry him; he also suggested she take time off and really heal herself with ozone. “I used it every day. It was intense, and it often made me feel like I had the flu, but I kept at it. I wanted to completely heal so I could get pregnant.” Slowly but surely she recovered total health, her chronic yeast infections vanished, robust good energy returned, and today they have a healthy daughter.
Ozone can be taken into the body through insufflations (gas that is infused for a few minutes either into the ear, the rectum, or the vagina), by Ozona ting water and drinking it, by Ozona ting olive oil and applying it topically, by using a funnel to ozonated a specific part of the body, or by using an ozone steam sauna, which is perhaps the most powerful method. These saunas utilize a fiberglass steam cabinet where you sit comfortably inside the cabinet up to your neck, with your head in the open air.
Carlos LeClair, a 73-year-old living in Florida, is convinced that ozone saunas eliminated his lyme disease symptoms when 24 months of antibiotics did not. Like many who use ozone saunas, he developed a rash. It is thought that the rash is part of a detox reaction, since continued use of ozone results in fading of the rash, according to Pressman. LeClair agrees. “I am absolutely convinced that the itchiness and rash I experienced, mainly on my chest, was due to an interaction of the ozone with toxins in my body. The rash was gone after eight months of ozone saunas. When I had completed twelve months, twice a week, I decided to do a 30-minute sauna every day for ten days, just to make sure that I had finished off the lyme bug. By the sixth consecutive day of ozone saunas I woke up to find a 3-inch diameter bull’s-eye rash over my left kidney.”
The bull’s-eye rash is unique among rashes and diagnostic of Lyme disease all by itself. In naturopathic parlance, this bull’s-eye would be called ‘retracing’—an illness peels back symptomatically over time from the most recent to the oldest symptoms. Carlos LeClair considers himself well today: he has had no symptoms of Lyme disease in the last two years.
Ken Gullan, Director of the Institute for Research Integration (IRI) in San Diego, CA, has used ozone saunas for 18 months to eliminate asbestos poisoning from three years when he worked for a mining business in Africa. When he began the saunas, he had mild prostatitis, athlete’s foot, fatigue, and above all, over 450 fatty tumors called lipomas all over his body. “I used to joke that I looked like a bunch of grapes in a pair of pantyhose.” The lipomas were probably the body’s attempt to safely surround asbestos fibers with fatty tumors. “Initially I got a really bad rash. It seemed like I couldn’t detox any other way than out through the skin.” Today, his prostatitis is gone, his athlete’s foot has disappeared, and he has about 160 lipomas left. “I’ve got an incredible amount of energy now; I believe that is the biggest overall benefit.”
I myself am at the beginning of my ozone therapy experiment. I have tried the sauna four times and found myself in an energized and peaceful state afterwards. I am about to embark on a more regular protocol, hoping that by combining it with my hyperbaric oxygen chamber, I will provide my body with a truly powerful two-pronged healing therapy that allows my cells to breathe (oxygen) and helps them kill pathogens (ozone).
HYPERTHERMIA: How Saunas Can Heal
A third very powerful modality that can be carried out at home is sauna therapy. Human exposure to toxins has dramatically increased in the last century, and their residues can be reduced through sauna therapy. In addition, sauna increases circulation and improves lymph flow. By allowing the body to eliminate toxins through the skin, sauna therapy helps the liver, kidneys, and bowel. As you sit in the sauna, your body temperature goes up, mimicking the natural fever response—which boosts the immune system.
Sauna therapy can be done at home. Dr. White has a top of the line Far Infrared Sauna, while I have a very inexpensive near infrared bulb sauna designed by naturopath Larry Wilson. Others use far infrared heat lamps. Although there is much debate about the benefits of different types of saunas, and the depth that various forms of infrared penetrate into the body, we feel that most forms of sauna, used carefully, are helpful. Infrared saunas are easier to tolerate because they tend to heat the body and not the air, allowing people to tolerate much longer sauna time and achieve the same results. As mentioned previously, Lance Brubaker melded hyperbaric and sauna therapy to heal himself. “Spirochetes don’t like pressure, oxygen, or heat, so I offered them all three,” he recalls. Tissue oxygen levels remain elevated for hours after a hyperbaric chamber session, and the infrared sauna heat increases circulation and stimulates the immune system. The two can be synergistic.
The length of time spent in the sauna varies with each individual. Most chronically ill individuals should start with about 10 minutes, and see how that impacts them over the next 24-48 hours. I overdid my sauna therapy in the beginning, staying in for 45 minutes and experienced an increase in muscle pain as a result. After Dr. Wilson performed hair mineral analysis on me he advised me to reduce my sauna to 20 minutes every other day.
“It is important to temper treatments like hyperbaric oxygen, ozone and sauna with your body’s ability to handle the treatment,” notes Dr. White.
Rosemary Trudeau, an Australian woman who has been ill with some form of CFIDS or possibly lyme for 24 years, reports the bulb sauna has normalized her blood pressure for the first time in decades. “The first time I used the sauna,” she recalls, “I only coped with 5 minutes and then had to crawl into bed. Since then I have built up the time to twenty minutes, a ten minute rest, and another twenty minutes. My blood pressure had been 80/60 for twenty years. After ten weeks my blood pressure is up to 110/70. I am not so dizzy, am using my walking frame less and managing to stay vertical for hours every day. I also had a blood test and the nurse used an adult needle and managed to get a whole vial of blood. This is one of the best things I’ve done for my health in years. I am feeling a lot more optimistic about getting well. My stamina is much better and I'm managing to do all sorts of things I haven't felt like doing for years. I am recommending it to many other chronic lymies and CFS patients, who are being told there is nothing they can do about their neurally-mediated hypotension. The bulb sauna is working wonders for me.”
DETOXIFICATION: Last But Not Least
Building the body up and detoxifying at the same time are crucial to successfully improving a person’s health. “It is common to find people with chronic illness that have compromised ability to detoxify,” explains Dr. White. “Generally, the chronically ill body is in an acid state. It can be useful to eat and juice foods that are alkaline to help decrease acidity. These include any green vegetables, especially the leafy ones; as well as figs, lima beans, apricots, spinach and lemons.”
The colon, liver and kidneys are the most common routes of detoxification, but your lungs, lymph and skin can also rid the body of waste. “Most people I have worked with have very sluggish or stagnant lymph systems,” says Dr. White. To detox at home, drink clean water, along with electrolytes on a daily basis. Try to drink half your body weight in ounces, so if you weigh 100 pounds, try to drink 50 ounces over the course of the day. An electrolyte formula Dr. White recommends is E-Lyte. “Your whole body depends on water and minerals to function. I also recommend dry brush massage to encourage lymph flow.”
Colon cleansing, via enemas, home colemas, or professional colonics, can also be useful. Dr. White recommends a 48-ounce plastic enema bucket for those new to colon cleansing, rather than an enema bag (the latter are usually made out of rubber, a petroleum product). Liver flushes (using various formulas) can also decrease toxic load on the body by helping clear the liver and gallbladder of stones and sludge. Carlos LeClair recalls being advised to do liver flushes with ozone, and in retrospect, “I wish I had followed the advice derived from others' experiences and thoroughly flushed out my liver before beginning the saunas. I believe that if I had done this, the rash might not have lasted so long.”
Herbal support can also be useful. Two herbs that are receiving a lot of attention in the lyme and CFIDS community lately are artemisinin and samento. The former is a derivative of artemisia that is said to be useful in a tick-borne infection called Bayesian. It also has a history in Chinese medicine of being antispirochetal. In addition, it is antifungal. The latter, samento, is a form of cat’s claw that seems to be immune modulating and antibacterial.
It is wise to enlist the aid of a health care practitioner who is familiar with these procedures and herbs to help design a program of detoxification that is gentle but thorough. “As you heal and work on yourself it will be natural to have days that are worse and better,” explains Dr. White. “It is also common to have emotional responses triggered by the healing and detoxification cycles. It is natural to release what I call emotional toxins as well as physical toxins through this process. That gives us an opportunity to grow and heal in new ways.”
As emotional and even spiritual issues, come to the surface, it is important to keep a positive attitude. One of the best books on healing through the power of the mind is available free on the web via download. Called Your Empowering Spirit (Y.E.S.), by Gary Sinclair, it is an inspiring book about healing from the inside out. Sinclair claims to have healed himself of severe multiple sclerosis.
What is Far Infrared Rays?
By: Professor Li Dong Qi
The complete spectrum of sunlight consists of visible and invisible rays. The visible rays are red, orange, yellow, green, indigo, blue and violet in colours (Known as rainbow colours). The invisible rays are Ultra Violet, X-rays, Gamma, Cosmic, Microwave, Long Wave, Electrical Wave and Infrared
Electromagnetic waves between visible light and the microwave are called infrared waves. The wave length of infrared waves range from 0.76 micron to 1,000 microns. The ranges of Near, Medium and Far Infrared Rays are 0.76 to 1.5micron, 1.5 to 4 micron, and 4 to 1,000 micron respectively.
The Physical Characteristic of FIR are : a. Invisibility b. Linearity, refractivity and reflectivity c. Upon being absorbed by various objects, the ability to produce warmth and harmonize with the natural life-force released by human body to enhance resonance absorption. The ability to penetrate deep into the human body.
The sun, of course, emits the visible rays with which we can discriminate colours in the spectrum and also emits various invisible rays. One of the invisible rays is the ultra-violet which is beyond the violet in the spectrum.
The infrared rays (FIR) are also invisible and contiguous to the red and of the visible spectrum. There are other invisible rays such as X-rays, gamma rays and cosmic rays. They have wavelengths shorter than that of ultra violet rays and are harmful to human being and other living things.
There are invisible rays having wavelength longer than the infrared rays, such as micro waves and long waves. They do not effect human being and other living things and are generally called 'radio waves'.
It is said that about 80% of sunlight is infrared rays. Because of its wide range of wavelength, the infrared rays are usually divided into three zones
BIOGENETIC RAYS
The recent studies on biotechnology revealed that the far-infrared rays having wavelength ranging from 6 microns to 14 microns played an important role for formation and growing of living things.
For this reason, these specific far-infrared rays are called "biogenetic rays". All living things on the earth have, as integral parts of them, water and proteins. Water molecules are always oscillating. If water molecules are expose to oscillating action 0f 8-10 micron wavelength (some as wavelength of water molecular oscillation), the "resonance" occurs between the two oscillations.
The resonance causes ionization of water into hydrogen ion and hydroxide ion at extremely high speed (10/12 sec.). This ionization is called "activation of water". If such activation of water occurs in human cellular tissues, the metabolism of cells and excretion of residues from cells or nutrition are enhanced …… promoted growing of living things. The infrared rays from the sun are peak at 3.5 to 10 microns of wavelength. Therefore it can be easily understood that the infrared rays 0f 6 to 14 microns are particularly important for a living things.
WHAT ARE BIOGENETIC RAYS?
THE FAR-INFRARED RAYS ARE PARTS OF THE SUNLIGHT - Beside the visible rays with which we can discriminate colours in spectrum, the sun also emits the invisible rays. One of the invisible rays is the far-infrared ray which is beyond the red in the spectrum. - The far-infrared have attracted researchers attention because of their marvelous effect to human being
HEAT EMITS THE FAR-INFRA RED RAYS
If you heat an earthen pot, stone pot, or unglazed port fill with chestnuts, you will find that the chestnuts are baked softer than you baked than in you iron pot. This "soft baking" is an effect of the far infrared rays produced when ceramics, stone or the like is heated.
LOW-TEMPERATURE FAR-INFRARED RAYS EMITTING
Human being itself also emits far infrared rays to body tissues, whereby circulation of blood is enforced. The good circulation of bloods and body liquids enhances distribution of oxygen and nutrition to every part of human body, thus promoting metabolism in the organism. In short, the use of bedding made Bio Ceramics provides you with better and sound sleep and faster recovery from fatigue.
Only far-infra red rays having specific wavelength are effective to living things. The recent biological and biophysical researchers revealed that the far-infrared rays are effective to human body when their wavelength is with in the range from 6 microns to 14 microns (the far- infrared rays have wavelength ranging from 4 microns to 1,000 microns). Within this range of wavelength, the far-infrared rays cause resonance with molecular oscillation of water involved in cellular tissues of human being end can penetrate the body of human being.
WATER MOLECULES ARE QUITE SENSITIVE TO FAR-INFRARED RAYS
All living things have water molecules.
Human body consists of 70% or more water. For all other animals, fishes, birds, insects and plants, water is indispensable part of body. For vegetables and fruits, overwhelmingly large part is water. You will often experience that some water is tasty but other is not so tasty though there is no difference in appearance and that good water makes tea, coffee, etc. tastier. In fact, quality of processed of food depends on quality of water used in processing.
High-quality always necessary for manufacture of beers, wines, juices and other liquors or beverages. You will be astonished if you hear that water itself can be made -------- without use of sugar or other additives or without purification, only by exposing it to the far-infrared rays.
Then water is exposed to the far-infrared rays, its molecules are activated. When you drink activated water, you will taste it "fresh". Although human being and other living things are fresh if they are exposed to the far-infrared rays, they do not absorb all infrared rays, it can absorb the far infrared rays having specific wavelengths ranging from 6 to 14 microns.
If orange, lemon, apple or other fruit is exposed to the far-infrared rays having these wavelength, it ripens and becomes sweeter to tastier due to increase the sugar content in that fruit. This fact testifies to the marvelous effect of the far-infrared rays.
What and how far-infrared rays do to our bodies?
1. Far-infra radiation penetrates into our body and\d heats up from the inside.
2. Heat is spread outwards by conduction in bones, convection in tissues fluids and far infra radiation.
3. The growing warmth (conduction and convection) - dilates blood vessels & fine capillaries - improve circulation - facilitates removal of impurities and influx of nutrients.
Some examples of vital organic compounds Organics Structures - enzymes - ------------ - vitamins - antibodies/antigens - natural antibodies - complex proteins & Carbohydrates - simple sugars - red & white blood corpuscles - vital organs (brain hearts, liver and kidney) - endocrine glands (adrenaline gland) - tissues (muscles, connective tissue)
Summary:
Far infrared ray’s works on two principles;
1. Heating from inside to outside
2. Energizing of organic/water molecules
Products:
Three materials most effective yet are:
1. Oxidized chrome with finely divided porcelain
2. Oxidized chrome with stainless steel
3. Bio-Ceramic fibres
The effectiveness of oxidized chrome with stainless steel however is found to fade in the long run. Certain alloys of Nickel are introduced as radiation generators. Such alloys absorb and radiate all wavelength or frequency of light (E.M Wave). Of these, only far infra is selectively absorbed by the oxidized chrome and porcelain. The rest is reflected away. Bio-Ceramic fibres are at present the ultimate material used to store far-infra rays.
Other Therapeutic Effects of Infrared Therapy
The following information has been summarized from Chapter 9 of Therapeutic Heat and Cold, Fourth Edition, Editors Justus F. Lehmann, MD, Williams, and Wilkin, or concluded from data gathered there.
Generally it is accepted that heat produces the following desirable therapeutic effects:
1. Infrared heat increases the extensibility of collagen tissues. Tissues heated to 45 degrees Celsius and then stretched exhibit a non elastic residual elongation of about 0.5 to 0.9 percent that persists after the stretch is removed. This does not occur in these same tissues when stretched at normal tissue temperature.
Stretching of tissue in the presence of heat would be especially valuable in working with ligaments, joint capsules, tendons, fasciae, and synoviurn that have become scarred, thickened, or contracted. Experiments cited clearly showed low-force stretching could produce significant residual elongation when heat is applied together with stretching or range of motion exercises.
2. Infrared heat decreases joint stiffness. There was a 20% decrease in rheumatoid finger joint stiffness at 45 degrees Celsius (112°F) as compared with 33 degrees Celsius (92°F) which correlated perfectly to both subjective and objective observation of stiffness. Speculation has it that any stiffened joint and thickened connective tissues may respond in a similar fashion.
3. Infrared heat relieves muscle spasms. Muscle spasms have long been observed to be reduced through the use of heat, be they secondary to underlying skeletal, joint, or neuropath logical conditions. This result is possibly produced by the combined effect of heat on both primary and secondary afferent nerves from spindle cells and from its effect on Golgi tendon organs.
4. Infrared heat treatment leads to pain relief. Pain may be relieved via the reduction of attendant or secondary spasms. Pain is also at times related to ischemia due to tension or spasm that can be improved by hyperthermia that heat-induced vasodilatation produces, thus breaking the feedback loop in which ischemia leads to further spasm and then more pain. Heat has been shown to reduce pain sensation by direct action on both free-nerve endings in tissues and on peripheral nerves. In one dental study, repeated heat applications led finally to abolishment of the whole nerve response responsible for pain arising from dental pulp. Heat may lead to increased endorphin production and a shutting down of the so-called "spinal gate" of Melzack and Wall, each of which can reduce pain.
Localized infrared therapy using lamps tuned to the 2 to 25 micron wave band is used for the treatment and relief of pain by over 40 reputable Chinese medical institutes.
5. Infrared heat increases blood flow. Heating one area of the body produces reflex-modulated vasodilators in distant-body areas, even in the absence of a change in core temperature. Heat one extremity and the contra lateral extremity also dilates; heat a forearm and both lower extremities dilate.
Heating muscles produces an increased blood flow level similar to that seen during exercise. Temperature elevation also produces increased blood flow and dilation directly in capillaries, arterioles, and venules, probably through direct action on their smooth muscles. The release of bradykinin, released as a consequence of sweat gland activity, also produces increased blood flow and vasodilatation.
Whole body hyperthermia, with a consequent core temperature elevation, further induces vasodilatation via a hypothalamic-induced decrease in sympathetic tone on the arteriovenous anastomoses. Vasodilatation is also produced by axonal reflexes that change vasomotor balance.
6. Infrared heat assists in resolution of inflammatory infiltrates, edema, and exudates. Increased peripheral circulation provides the transport needed to help evacuate edema, which can help inflammation, decrease pain, and help speed healing.
7. Infrared heat introduced in cancer therapy. More recently, infrared heat has been used in cancer therapy. This is a new experimental procedure that shows great promise in some cases when used properly. American researchers favor careful monitoring of the tumor temperature; whereas, the successes reported in Japan make no mention of such precaution.
8. Infrared heat affects soft tissue injury. Infrared healing is now becoming a leading edge care for soft tissue injuries to promote both relief in chronic or intractable "permanent" cases, and accelerated healing in newer injuries.
Ear, Nose, and Throat Conditions Relieved with Infrared Heat
In Japan, ear, nose, and throat conditions were relieved with infrared heat treatments:
• Chronic middle-ear inflammation or infection (in one study of chronic serous otitis media no pathogenic bacteria were isolated in 70% of the subjects studied after the use of heat)
• Sore throats
• Tinnitus (chronic severe case cleared with 10 infrared treatments)
• Nose bleeding (reduced)
• Infrared therapy is used routinely in burn units throughout Asia
• Skin conditions improved in Japan and China with the use of infrared heat application.
• Nettle rash
• Clogged pores (unplugged of cosmetics, unexcelled skin texture and tone)
• Poor skin tone (restored to a more youthful level)
• Scars and pain from burns or wounds (decreased in severity and extent)
• Lacerations (healed quicker with less pain and scarring)
• Acne (three to four treatments may open pores that have been nonfunctioning for years, forcing out clogging cosmetics, and loosening dry outer skin)
• Teenage skin problems (clearing acne and blackheads)
• Body odor (improved functioning of the skin especially body odor, induced by occupational exposure to odorous chemicals)
• Eczema and Psoriasis (respond well)
• Sunburn (According to the Clayton’s Electrotherapy, 9th Edition, "infrared radiations are the only antidote to excessive ultraviolet radiations.")
• Ketoids (form at a reduced rate in those prone to their formation and may be softened by infrared heat if they have formed)
• Dandruff (increased blood flow through the scalp)

Sick and Tired? Reclaim Your Inner Terrain
by Robert O. Young, PhD.DSc.1999
Because of the level of pollution we are exposed to and its many sources, as well as poor dietary and exercise habits, the therapeutic value of regular sweating has become immense. It has benefits for both body and mind and, in fact, is the primary benefit of exercise.
One of the best passive exercises is the radiant heat of an infrared sauna which, causes a profound deep sweat. After about 30 minutes of exposure, the blood vessels of the skin dilate to allow more blood to flow to the surface to support the cooling process. The millions of sweat glands covering the body are infused with fluid from the blood. In turn, they empty to the skin's surface, thereby flushing large amounts of toxins, including toxic acids and heavy metals, from the body.
My research over the last two years shows that a radiant heat (infrared) sauna provides the following benefits:
-Speeds up metabolic processes of vital organs and glands, including endocrine glands.
-Inhibits the development of pleomorphic microforms and creates a "fever reaction" of rising temperature that neutralizes them.
-Increases the number of leukocytes in the blood.
-Places demand on the heart to work harder thus, exercising it and also producing a drop in diastolic blood pressure (the low side).
-Stimulates dilation of peripheral blood vessels thus, relieving pain (including muscle pain) and speeding the healing of sprain, strain, bursitis, arthritis, and peripheral vascular disease symptoms.
-Promotes relaxation thereby creating a feeling of well-being.
For those who are unable to exercise sufficiently, for whatever reason, the radiant heat infrared sauna is an excellent way to get the benefits of exercise without undue stress on the skeleton, muscles, and associated tissues. Such people have an even greater need for exercise and the sauna fills the bill.

HYPERTHERMIC DETOXIFICATION THERAPY USING THE FAR INFRARED SAUNA Center
Nanaimo, British Columbia Canada
Introduction
Saunas and steam baths have been used for centuries by cultures around the world to bring about detoxification. Traditionally, saunas have been used to improve mental clarity, to diminish pain and promote longevity. In the past few years, hyperthermia (sweat) therapy has been studied quite extensively and several papers on this subject have appeared in the scientific literature. Through this research, it has been shown that saunas greatly assist in the elimination of accumulated toxins. Toxic metals, including mercury as well as organic toxins such as PCB's and pesticide residues, are excreted in high quantities in the sweat during properly conducted hyperthermia therapy sessions.
Heat causes toxins to be released from cells. The toxic molecules will then reside transiently in the lymph fluid. Since sweat is manufactured from the lymph fluid, toxins present in the lymph fluid will exit the body through the sweat. Because the liver and kidneys are not required for this process, these organs are largely unburdened by hyperthermia therapy and toxins are able to leave the body even when liver or kidney function is impaired. This may be a distinct advantage for chronically ill patients whose livers and kidneys may already be under toxic stress.
OTHER ADVANTAGES OF HYPERTHERMIA IN THE CHRONICALLY ILL PATIENT
Hyperthermia therapy also is one of the few things, which brings about a significant rise in the level of growth hormone, an important hormone that helps to maintain lean body tissue, including muscle.
For the chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia (FMS) patient, hyperthermia therapy helps to restore normal autonomic nervous system functioning. This is the part of the nervous system, which governs unconscious functions such as muscle tension, sweating, blood pressure, digestion and balance. Autonomic dysregulation is the term used to describe changes in the nervous system, which result in many of the symptoms of chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia (FMS) . Muscle pain, excessive body odor, digestive complaints, visual disturbances and dizziness are some of the many manifestations of autonomic dysregulation. Repeated sessions of hyperthermia therapy can greatly assist in the restoration of normal autonomic nervous system functioning.
ADVANTAGES OF THE FAR INFRARED SAUNA
Many people with chronic illnesses find the high temperatures inside a regular sauna or steam room intolerable. In these traditional systems, the inside of the body is heated completely from the surface of the skin. Even though you feel very hot in these units, the heating is quite shallow - only a few millimeters below the skin. In the far infrared sauna, invisible light rays emanate from several infrared emitters. This infrared light penetrates deep into the fat and muscles of the body, creating a more powerful detoxifying influence upon the deeper tissues of the body. As well, since the air temperature remains much lower than in a traditional sauna, the individual feels more comfortable. Sweating often begins before the person feels very hot at all and the sweating is more profuse than in a traditional sauna. Finally, unlike traditional saunas or steam baths, which can often leave a person feeling exhausted, the far infrared sauna is usually quite energizing. Many people actually use these before going to work in the morning, something that one would never do with a traditional sauna. Research conducted largely in Japan suggests that the far infrared sauna has a wider range of therapeutic effects than traditional saunas or steam baths, especially for detoxification.
